Selling Citrus
Recently I had the opportunity to sell citrus for a giving person in my ward named Olas Lunt, who is a master gardener. Olas has about 3 acres of land and over 70 citrus trees. He taught me and the boys I worked with many skills including how to do real work. I ended up earning over $400, which put me over the $1000 threshold in my bank account. This was a great milestone for me. I loved getting to work for money.
A very valuable skill he taught us was how to handle money and record what we sold. We learned how to count change the correct way, not the McDonald’s way. At the beginning of the day he gave us $100 in change to use, called petty cash, at the end of the day if there was less than $100 we had to pay him back with the money we earned. Olas gave us a notepad to record what we sold, how much of it, and what was the cost.
We learned to always give a little more than the customer paid for, which is called the baker’s dozen. He taught us when counting back change you say how much the cost was then count out the money you are giving back in the end it should equal the amount they paid. Now in the future I will know how to count out change because of the lesson he taught me.
My partner and I also learned how to pick and identify the citrus. He has many citrus trees so remembering what each orange was called was a tough one. He has lemons, grapefruit, navels, tangelos, tangerines, and juice oranges. He gave us clippers and we picked and picked until we were stoked. He told us that if any part of the inside was showing it had to be thrown away because it wouldn’t last. Did you know that if one orange goes bad the entire box goes bad because it spreads? I think that this is valuable information because later when I have citrus trees I will need all of this knowledge.
The final skill he taught us was to have good customer service. Good customer service is needed so customers will want to come back. You should speak kindly, and go above and beyond. At first it was a little weird but on the third day I didn’t have a problem with it. One lady came back because we gave her so much and because we were so kind. From what I have heard customer service comes in handy in many different careers.
I am very appreciative for all he has done for and taught me. He said that he doesn’t care for the money all he cares about is getting to spend time with me and the boys I worked with. That is a great example to me. He is such a cool 75 year old, and I want to be just as cool as he is when I am 75. He gave me so many skills that will be so useful. I hope he knows how appreciative I am, and I am so grateful to be one of his lads.
